U.S. Geological Survey-U.S. Department of Energy Cooperative Studies
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) provides hydrologic, scientific, and technical expertise to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to address environmental and scientific issues at the Nevada National Security Sites (NNSS) and surrounding area. The NNSS, in Nye County, Nevada, was the site of historical nuclear testing. An overview of selected USGS program efforts in cooperation with DOE are provided below.
USGS Core Library and Data Center
The USGS Core Library and Data Center is on the NNSS at Mercury, Nevada. The Core Library was established as a repository for geologic, hydrologic, and geophysical data and materials collected in support of DOE defense and environmental programs at the NNSS. The Core Library is operated by the USGS and has been used as a staging area for many scientific studies throughout the southwestern United States, in addition to the NNSS. The Core Library houses drill-bit cuttings, drill core (both vertical and horizontal), geophysical logs, and other rock samples collected mostly on the NNSS. Some samples are from other DOE facilities in New Mexico, Mississippi, Colorado, Louisiana, Alaska, and other areas in Nevada. Currently, the Core Library stores more than 2,000,000 linear feet of core and cuttings. Included within the facility is a small reference library with approximately 2,500 publications pertaining to the NNSS and surrounding area.

USGS-DOE Cooperative Studies and Groundwater Monitoring in Nevada
The USGS, in cooperation with DOE, participates in program efforts to acquire hydrologic information at the NNSS and surrounding area. Data are collected from monitoring sites on and adjacent to the NNSS by the USGS and other cooperating agencies in support of various DOE programs. Depth to water, groundwater withdrawal, and water-temperature data for active and inactive sites that are or were a part of the various programs are available through the groundwater monitoring website.
